FAQ's

Q: Does this enhanced DVR have the same features as the regular TiVo HD with 160 Gb?
A: Yes. The original drive that comes from the factory (160 Gb) has been replaced with a larger drive (1 Tb).

Q: What kind of hard drive does it come with?
A: TiVo has used different brand hard drives at different times; at the moment, most TiVo units ship from the factory with Western Digital drives. We primarily use drives from Western Digital, but sometimes we use drives from Hitachi, Samsung, Fujitsu, Seagate and other major brands. They all are high performance 3.5", 7200 RPM drives with a SATA interface.

Q: What is Acoustic Management Mode? Are the drives used in this TiVo for multimedia use?
A: Hard drives are normally used in computers and data processing equipment. Some modern consumer electronic products such as Digital Video Recorders (DVRs), also use hard drives. However, the type of demands DVRs place on hard drives are different from what a computer needs. For example, in a computer, one would normally want a drive to perform at its maximum speed. DVRs, however, do not need the same level of performance from a drive, and the typical performance characteristics of current 3.5" hard drives in today's market far exceeds the requirements of most DVRs. However, heat and noise produced by the drive are much more important in this application than in a computer setting. Therefore, most (not all) drive manufacturers have a special mode which minimizes the noise and heat produced by drive operation. This is often known as Acoustic Management Mode (AMM). If you purchase a hard drive on the open market, it will NOT operate in this mode; so if you do your own upgrade, your drive will NOT be operating in AMM. TiVo normally activates this mode on its internal hard drives, and we follow their lead. All of our drives, whether inside a TiVo that you purchase from us, or purchased as an upgrade, are set to operate in any native AMM mode available unless you specifically request otherwise.

Q: Does the "XL equivalent" you refer to in the auction apply only to the hard drive? Is this unit THX certified?
A: Correct. The XL unit is also THX certified and comes with the GLO (backlit) version of the TiVo remote; the unit we sell is the regular HD (TCD652160) model, which does not have THX certification and comes with a regular (non-lighting) remote control. All features and capabilities of the units are identical.

Q: Does this unit come with the standard TiVo 90 day warranty?
A: ANY enhanced TiVo, whether from us or someone else, has lost the original manufacturer's 90-day warranty because the DVR's case had to be opened to perform the enhancement. However, we include our own 90-day warranty with our enhanced DVRs. We also sell extended warranties (by the year) for our own units at the time of sale if you wish to purchase one.

Q: Will I be able to register the TiVo lifetime service in my name?
A: Actually, TiVo service is registered to the TiVo unit itself, not a person, which is identified by the unique, internal 15-digit "serial" number known as the TiVo Service Number. If you already have an existing account with TiVo, please provide us with your TiVo account information (registered name, email, phone number and address) and we will have the unit you purchased transferred into your existing TiVo account. If you do not yet have a TiVo account, please provide us with the same information, and we will create a TiVo account for you and send you your account information via email.

Q: Can I pick up locally and avoid shipping costs?
A: Sorry, at the moment these units come from different offices and local pickup is not currently available.
